Bargarh (Odisha): On the auspicious occasion of Chaitra Mangalbara, the Shital Yatra of Maa Samaleswari, the presiding deity of Bargarh, was conducted with great devotion. During this ritual, a neem branch symbolizing the goddess was taken in a procession across the city, while devotees, especially women, eagerly awaited its arrival at their doorsteps to offer prayers and seek blessings for the well-being of themselves and all living beings.
Every year, this sacred Shital Yatra takes place on each Tuesday of the Chaitra month. The tradition is believed to bring relief from the intense summer heat and ensure prosperity. The ritual began with a special puja at the Samaleswari temple, followed by the worship of the neem branch by the priests. Accompanied by the rhythmic beats of bells and conch sounds, the sacred branch was carried through the streets of the city.
As the procession passed through various neighborhoods, devotees placed offerings such as milk, pana (a traditional drink), and flowers at their doorsteps. Once the neem branch reached their homes, they performed rituals by offering flowers, sindoor, and prasad while pouring water and milk over the sacred branch. Many believers also touched the neem branch and sprinkled the consecrated water on their heads, seeking divine blessings.
Historically, this ritual has been deeply rooted in the belief that it helps in preventing heat-related illnesses. In ancient times, when there were no medical treatments, people considered such diseases as divine retribution and sought Maa Samaleswari’s protection through this yatra. Even today, it is believed that the neem branch, after making its journey across the city, absorbs all negative energies and diseases. As per tradition, at the end of the procession, the neem branch is left at a specific spot, symbolizing the dispersal of ailments and the protection of the community.
The Shital Yatra follows a set route, stopping at every Hanuman temple in the city for worship before returning to the temple late at night. This age-old tradition continues to be observed with great reverence every Chaitra month, reflecting the unwavering faith of the devotees in Maa Samaleswari’s divine blessings.
