Bargarh (Odisha)- In a significant boost to Odisha’s cultural pride and textile legacy, the Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan visited the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) in Bargarh on Saturday, reaffirming the Centre’s support for the handloom sector, particularly the globally acclaimed Sambalpuri fabric. The minister’s visit underlined the importance of preserving traditional weaving heritage while ensuring the sustainable livelihood of rural artisans.

Sambalpuri handloom, celebrated worldwide for its artistic patterns, vibrant colours, and ikat technique, continues to stand as a powerful emblem of India’s rich textile traditions. The minister’s tour of IIHT, a premier institute established by the Central Government, was aimed at reviewing its academic activities, infrastructure, and community outreach in promoting handloom innovation and skill development.

During his interaction with students and faculty members, the Minister lauded the commitment of young weavers and researchers working to modernize traditional techniques without losing the cultural essence of handloom. He noted that institutes like IIHT are playing a transformative role in blending tradition with technology, thereby opening up new markets and opportunities for artisans.

“The Sambalpuri fabric is not just a cloth; it’s a story woven by generations. It is a testimony to the enduring spirit and creativity of our weavers,”  Minister Mr Pradhan remarked. He emphasized that such art forms are India’s cultural treasures and deserve both national pride and global promotion. He assured that the Union Government is committed to extending full support for further technological advancements, market expansion, and international recognition of Odisha’s handloom products.

He also praised IIHT-Bargarh for its inclusive approach in educating and training rural youth, especially from weaving communities, thereby empowering them with skills and knowledge to compete in global markets. The Minister was shown various student projects and research outputs focused on sustainable weaving, eco-friendly dyes, and digital design applications.

The visit also included a presentation on IIHT’s recent collaborations with international institutions and textile industries. These partnerships aim to elevate the visibility of Indian handloom on global fashion platforms while ensuring fair trade practices and better earnings for weavers.

Local weavers, artisans, and handloom entrepreneurs welcomed the minister’s words and expressed optimism about a brighter future with sustained government backing. Many shared their experiences of how IIHT training has helped them upgrade their craft, access modern tools, and connect with buyers beyond borders.

The visit concluded with the Minister unveiling a commemorative plaque on campus and encouraging students to become cultural ambassadors of Indian handloom. His address echoed a strong message — that Sambalpuri handloom is not just a regional heritage, but a national pride gaining global admiration.

The event marked a renewed focus on preserving India’s textile roots while nurturing innovation and global outreach, ensuring that the looms of Bargarh continue to weave stories of tradition, dignity, and empowerment.

During this visit, Bargarh MP Pradeep Purohit, Bargarh MLA  Ashwini Kumar Sarangi, Bhatli MLA Irashis Acharya, Attabira MLA Nihar Mahananda, Bijepur MLA Sanat Gartia and Jharsuguda MLA Tankadhar Tripathy were present along with the Union Minister.
