Bhubaneswar- A 15-year-old girl from Bayabar village in Puri district, who was grievously injured in a suspected arson attack, has been airlifted to AIIMS Delhi for advanced medical treatment. The critically burned teenager was initially being treated at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, where doctors reported that she had suffered 70 to 75 percent burn injuries.
The air evacuation was carried out on Sunday with a fully equipped air ambulance containing life support systems. To facilitate a smooth transfer, authorities created a green corridor from AIIMS Bhubaneswar to the airport. A specialized team of doctors accompanied her throughout the journey.
Medical experts have said the next 48 hours will be crucial for her survival, and arrangements for immediate, intensive care were already prepared at AIIMS Delhi.
The girl was allegedly set ablaze by three unknown assailants early Saturday morning in Bayabar village under Balanga police jurisdiction, Nimapara block. She was first rushed to Pipili Hospital for emergency care before being referred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar due to the severity of her condition. She had been placed on oxygen support upon arrival.
Responding to the gravity of the incident and rising political pressure, the Odisha government announced it will bear all medical expenses related to her treatment. The decision to shift her to Delhi followed widespread criticism and calls for better healthcare arrangements from various quarters, including opposition parties.
Family members accompanied her during the transfer process and were present at AIIMS Bhubaneswar as she was moved to the airport.
Meanwhile, police have launched a probe into the incident. Efforts are ongoing to identify the attackers and bring them to justice. The horrific nature of the assault has sparked statewide outrage, with growing demands for urgent action and stronger safety measures for women and girls.
