Bhubaneswar: President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Bhubaneswar on Thursday evening to attend the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention. Upon her arrival at the Biju Patnaik International Airport, she was received with a warm welcome by Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, and other dignitaries. After the ceremonial reception, the President proceeded to the Raj Bhavan, where she is scheduled to stay overnight.
On Friday, President Murmu will preside over the valedictory session of the three-day PBD convention. She will also confer the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards (PBSA), the highest honor given to overseas Indians. The awards recognize exceptional contributions made by Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), or institutions established by them in various fields.
The Ministry of External Affairs announced this year’s awardees, including Baroness Usha Kumari Prashar from the UK for her contributions to politics and Dr. Sharmila Ford from the US for her work in community service. Institutions and organizations are also among the recipients, reflecting the diverse and impactful achievements of the Indian diaspora. The awardees, selected by a Jury-cum-Awards Committee, symbolize the excellence and dedication of Indians across the globe.
The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, held from January 8 to 10 at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar, celebrates the theme, “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the convention, which commemorates Mahatma Gandhi’s return to India from South Africa on January 9, 1915.
The event showcases the vital role of the Indian diaspora in fostering connections and contributing to India’s development. As the PBD convention concludes, it reinforces the enduring bond between India and its global community..
