Bhubaneswar: In a landmark decision, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced that the state will now sponsor the National Kho Kho Team, shifting its focus from hockey to supporting another traditional Indian sport. This initiative underscores Odisha’s commitment to promoting indigenous sports and empowering athletes at the national level.
The sponsorship, set to commence in January 2025, will span three years, ending in December 2027. During this period, the Odisha government, through the Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC), will allocate ₹15 crore to the initiative, disbursing ₹5 crore annually.
This substantial investment aims to elevate the status of Kho Kho in the country, providing the necessary resources and infrastructure to enhance the performance of Indian players on national and international platforms. By supporting Kho Kho, Odisha seeks to celebrate its cultural heritage while carving a niche for the sport globally.
