The results of the 2024 assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, announced on Saturday, showcased contrasting political fortunes for major parties. While the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance celebrated a sweeping victory in Maharashtra, the JMM-led INDIA bloc marked a triumphant return to power in Jharkhand.
Maharashtra: BJP-Led Mahayuti Dominates
In Maharashtra, the BJP-Shiv Sena-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) alliance secured 235 out of 288 assembly seats, with the BJP alone claiming 132. The commanding victory has sparked speculation that Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is poised to take the Chief Minister’s seat for the third time.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the victory, stating: “The biggest message from Maharashtra after the Haryana polls is unity; ‘ek hain to safe hain’ has become the country’s ‘mahamantra’.”
Jharkhand: JMM-Led INDIA Bloc Storms Back
The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and its allies clinched 56 out of 81 assembly seats, paving the way for Hemant Soren’s return as Chief Minister. Expressing gratitude to voters, Soren said: “I thank people from all communities, farmers, women, and youth for their overwhelming support in making this election successful.”
Lok Sabha and Assembly Bypolls
Alongside these state elections, bypoll results for 48 assembly and two Lok Sabha constituencies across Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala, West Bengal, and Uttarakhand were also declared.
In a significant development, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress General Secretary, made her electoral debut with a massive victory in Kerala’s Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll, surpassing her brother Rahul Gandhi’s previous margin by over four lakh votes.
These results have underscored the dynamic and shifting political landscape ahead of the 2024 general elections.
