Keonjhar (Odisha): Keonjhar is set to emerge as a major hub for theatre and performing arts with the establishment of an Odisha branch of the National School of Drama (NSD). Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced the decision on Tuesday, underscoring the district’s deep-rooted cultural legacy and artistic traditions.

The announcement was made during the inauguration of a theatre workshop jointly organised by the National School of Drama and the dance academy Spiraja in Keonjhar town. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the proposed NSD centre would be set up with the support of the Central Government, while the Odisha Government would provide all necessary assistance to ensure its smooth establishment and growth.

Emphasising the importance of art and culture, Majhi said they form the very essence of society, giving voice to its emotions, struggles, aspirations, and collective dreams. He noted that Odisha has a long and vibrant tradition of performing arts that deserves greater institutional support and national exposure.

The Chief Minister also referred to several of the state’s iconic cultural forms, including the jatra tradition of Ganjam, ritualistic folk performances such as Danda Nata and Jhamu Jatra, and the globally recognised Chhau dance of Mayurbhanj, highlighting their role in shaping Odisha’s cultural identity.

The programme was attended by Member of Parliament Ananta Charan Naik, MLAs Padma Charan Haiburu and Fakirmohan Naik, along with senior government officials and representatives from the cultural fraternity.
