New Delhi: The Ayush industry in India has witnessed significant growth, with its market size reaching $18.1 billion in 2020-21, as estimated in a report titled ‘Ayush Sector in India: Prospects and Challenges’. The report, published in 2021 by the Forum on Indian Traditional Medicine (FITM) under the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), highlights the prospects and challenges in the sector.

The Government of India has been actively contributing to the growth of Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems through targeted initiatives and policies aimed at strengthening the sector.

Several programs have been implemented to promote the international presence of AYUSH products, including financial support for participation in global exhibitions and assistance for product registration with international regulatory bodies. These efforts aim to enhance the global acceptance and credibility of AYUSH products.

The Government has also focused on quality certification schemes, ensuring that AYUSH products meet international standards. This includes certifications under WHO guidelines and the AYUSH Premium Mark, which emphasize quality and compliance for herbal and traditional medicine products.

To further boost the sector, the Ayush Oushadhi Gunvatta Evam Uttpadan Samvardhan Yojana (AOGUSY) was introduced in 2021, with a five-year financial allocation aimed at modernizing pharmacies, enhancing drug testing facilities, and strengthening regulatory frameworks.

Additionally, the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIM&H) has been instrumental in developing standards for traditional medicine systems, ensuring their compliance with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and enhancing their credibility in domestic and international markets.

The formation of the Ayush Export Promotion Council (AYUSHEXCIL) is another step towards promoting exports and addressing trade issues in the Ayurveda and traditional medicine sectors. This council facilitates capacity building, organizes international events, and safeguards research in AYUSH healthcare.

The Union Minister of State (I/C) for Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, presented this information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, underscoring the Government’s commitment to the holistic development and global outreach of India’s traditional medicine systems.
