Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police of Bhubaneswar has unveiled a renewed focus on community engagement as a central strategy to address rising crime rates in 2025. While the implementation of free registration policies has led to an increase in crime reporting, major crimes such as murder, dacoity, robbery, burglary, theft, rioting, and rape have seen a significant decline.

Twin City Police Commissioner S. Debadatta Singh emphasized that the rise in reported cases reflects the success of policies encouraging victims to report crimes without hesitation. In 2024, 21,613 cases were registered, an 11% increase from the 19,410 cases reported in 2023. However, Bhubaneswar witnessed a reduction in major crimes, with 14,416 cases in 2024 compared to 11,975 in 2023.

To build on this progress, the Commissionerate Police plans to amplify community policing initiatives, actively involving residents in crime prevention and safety programs. This approach forms part of their New Year agenda to create a safer environment through closer police-public collaboration.

In addition to fostering community ties, the police have intensified efforts against property crimes and cybercrime. In 2024, 1,125 suspects linked to property crimes were apprehended, leading to the recovery of 5.555 kg of gold, over 15 kg of silver, and 779 mobile phones. However, cybercrime remains a major concern, with 7,263 fraud cases reported, involving financial losses exceeding Rs 82 crore.

To address the growing cybercrime threat, public awareness campaigns have been launched, alongside the introduction of a toll-free helpline, 1930. For 2025, tackling traffic congestion and reducing accidents in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack have also been identified as key priorities.

By adopting a comprehensive strategy and strengthening collaboration with the public, the Commissionerate Police aims to ensure a safer and more secure living environment for all residents.
