New Delhi- The Election Commission of India has released the official schedule for the 2025 Vice-Presidential Election through a Gazette of India Extraordinary. If voting is necessary, it will take place on September 9, 2025. According to the notification, candidates must file their nominations by August 21, with scrutiny scheduled for August 22. The final date to withdraw a nomination is August 25. If the election is contested, voting will be conducted on September 9 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at designated polling locations.
The Commission earlier appointed P.C. Mody, Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha, as the Returning Officer for the election. Garima Jain, Joint Secretary, and Vijay Kumar, Director at the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, will serve as Assistant Returning Officers. A public notice outlining the nomination procedure was issued on August 7 in accordance with election rules.
Nomination papers can be submitted at Room No. RS-28, First Floor, Parliament House, New Delhi, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on working days, excluding public holidays. If the Returning Officer is unavailable, Assistant Returning Officers will receive nominations at the same location. Each nomination must include a certified copy of the electoral roll showing that the candidate is a registered voter in a parliamentary constituency, along with a deposit of Rs15,000 either in cash or with a valid treasury receipt.
The scrutiny of nominations will take place at Room No. F-100, Sangoshthi-2, Parliament House at 11 a.m. on August 22. Withdrawals must be made by 3 p.m. on August 25 by the candidate or an authorised proposer or seconder. The Election Commission has arranged for the simultaneous publication of the notification and public notice in the gazettes of all States and Union Territories for wider dissemination.
