Bhubaneswar – In a heart-wrenching incident, six migrant workers from Odisha lost their lives early this morning after a massive collapse at a private granite quarry in Andhra Pradesh’s Bapatla district. The mishap occurred at Satyakrishna Granite Quarry near Ballikurava when a large section of the quarry’s edge suddenly gave way, trapping several workers under the rubble.
Around 20 laborers were reportedly present at the site during the time of the accident. While six workers died on the spot, at least ten others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate and save workers feared to be still trapped under the heavy granite boulders.
Among the deceased, two have been identified as Bhaskar Bisoi and Tukuna Dalei, both residents of Alora village in the Mohana block of Gajapati district. The identities of the other four victims are yet to be officially confirmed, though they are believed to be from Ganjam district.
Following the tragedy, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow and directed authorities to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured. Senior officials from the local administration are overseeing the ongoing rescue operations at the quarry site.
This incident once again highlights the risks faced by migrant laborers working in hazardous conditions far from home, driven by poverty and lack of livelihood options. Families in Odisha now await the return of their loved ones—not with hope, but in mourning.
