Rourkela (Odisha)- In a deeply disturbing incident, a woman working at the Rourkela Municipal Corporation (RMC), identified as Saraswati Samanta, attempted suicide on Sunday, reportedly driven by years of mental harassment and unfulfilled job promises.
Before taking the extreme step, Saraswati went live on social media, sharing her emotional distress. The video alarmed her colleagues, who rushed to her home, broke in, and immediately took her to the Rourkela Government Hospital. She remains in critical condition.
Saraswati’s troubles began nearly a decade ago when her husband died in the line of duty. She was promised a job at the RMC on compassionate grounds, but sources claim she was never officially regularised despite being engaged in work for several years.
Over time, the emotional strain of job insecurity and alleged mental harassment at the workplace took a severe toll on her health. Her suicide attempt has sparked outrage among RMC staff, who are now demanding a detailed investigation and accountability for those responsible for her suffering.
The incident highlights serious concerns about the treatment of temporary employees and the need for mental health safeguards within government offices.
