Bhubaneswar- In a significant move aimed at enhancing prison management and supporting ongoing correctional reforms, the Odisha government has ordered the closure of three sub-jails across the state. These jails—Khandapada in Nayagarh, Nilagiri in Balasore, and Sohela in Bargarh—will now be merged with the respective district jails in their regions.
The State Home Department issued a formal notification on July 7, 2025, confirming that the three sub-jails will be permanently de-notified and cease to operate as independent prison facilities. This decision is part of the state’s broader plan to optimize administrative functions and consolidate correctional infrastructure.
According to the notification, the Director General & Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services has been tasked with overseeing the smooth transition. This includes transferring inmates, relocating staff, and reallocating resources to the designated district jails. Authorities have also been instructed to secure the now-defunct sub-jail premises and coordinate with local administrations for possible future use of these buildings.
The restructuring order takes effect immediately, underscoring the government’s commitment to a more streamlined and efficient prison system across Odisha.
