Bhubaneswar- Odisha has secured a remarkable achievement in the field of school education by climbing to the 5th position nationally in the Performance Grading Index (PGI 2.0) for the academic year 2023–24. This marks a dramatic improvement from its 14th position in 2019-20, reflecting the state’s focused reforms in the education sector.

The PGI 2.0, developed by the Ministry of Education, evaluates states based on 73 indicators spanning two major categories: Outcomes and Governance & Management. Odisha scored 595.6 and received the PRACHESTA-3 grade, demonstrating strong performance across multiple parameters.

Former Chief Minister and current Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik, under whose leadership Odisha’s education system underwent major changes, credited the 5T initiative (Technology, Teamwork, Transparency, Time, and Transformation) for this success.

“Odisha’s rise to the 5th rank in the School Grading System is a proud moment. Through the 5T initiative, we have transformed nearly 7,000 schools, giving students a platform to dream big,” Naveen stated in a post on X.

He also emphasized the role of teachers, parents, and administrators, thanking them for their contribution in reshaping public education in the state.

Apart from the overall ranking, Odisha topped the “Access” domain, receiving the highest grade with a score ranging between 941 and 1000, indicating significant progress in ensuring educational access to children across the state, including in rural and tribal areas.

Naveen Patnaik reiterated that the dream of a New Odisha is rooted in empowering children through education. He stressed that the strong foundation laid in government schools is already bearing fruit as students begin to excel in various spheres.

Odisha’s success in the PGI 2.0 rankings is a validation of years of investment in school infrastructure, digital learning, and inclusive policies. As the state continues on its educational reform journey, the emphasis remains on building a future where every child, regardless of background, has access to quality education.

The Performance Grading Index (PGI) was introduced by the Government of India to provide insights into the performance of school education systems across states and union territories. The upgraded PGI 2.0 version now evaluates more granular data, providing a clear picture of progress and challenges in achieving universal school education.
