Rayagada (Odisha)-The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a troubling case of alleged social ostracism in Odisha’s Rayagada district, where a Scheduled Tribe woman’s family was reportedly boycotted by villagers following her marriage to a man from the Scheduled Caste community.

According to a media report published on June 21, the woman’s family was subjected to intense social pressure, with villagers reportedly insisting on a “purification ritual” for the family to be allowed back into the community. As part of this, around 40 male family members were forced to undergo head tonsuring, allegedly to regain social acceptance.

In response to the media coverage, the NHRC stated that if the reported incident is accurate, it points to grave violations of human dignity and human rights. The Commission emphasized that no individual or community should face discrimination or social exclusion on the basis of caste or marital choice.

The NHRC has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Odisha, directing the state administration to submit a detailed report on the incident within two weeks. The report is expected to clarify the facts of the case, outline the actions taken by local authorities, and explain what steps are being implemented to prevent such occurrences in the future.

This incident once again brings to light the deep-rooted caste-based prejudices that continue to plague rural India, despite decades of constitutional safeguards and social reform. The alleged coercion of the woman’s family to perform a public act of “purification” is being seen as a form of public humiliation and forced compliance under social duress.

The NHRC’s action signals a push for institutional accountability in dealing with caste-related discrimination and social injustice. It also underscores the need for stronger community-level awareness, prompt administrative response, and strict enforcement of laws meant to protect marginalised communities.

As the state awaits further developments, the incident has triggered public outcry and concern among rights activists, who are demanding justice for the affected family and calling for greater protection for inter-caste couples across the country.

The NHRC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring equality, dignity, and justice for every citizen, regardless of their caste or community background.
