Bhubaneswar-  The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert for Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong gusty winds in several districts over the next few days, driven by two active cyclonic circulations over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD’s bulletin released on Tuesday, seven districts—Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Nuapada, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal —are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rain, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph at isolated places.

A yellow warning has also been sounded for Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Balangir, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, and Jagatsinghpur, predicting thunderstorms and surface winds of similar intensity.

Additionally, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sonepur, and Boudh may witness thunderstorms with slightly lower wind speeds of 30-40 kmph.

Apart from storm activity, the IMD has cautioned about hot and humid weather conditions in parts of coastal Odisha, particularly in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur, between June 10 and 11.

The forecast indicates that thunderstorm activity is expected to continue in many parts of the state till June 13. Following this, heavy rainfall is likely to intensify, affecting:

Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal on June 14, Nuapada and Nabarangpur on June 15, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar again on June 16.

The prevailing weather disturbances are linked to two cyclonic circulations—one over north Odisha and nearby areas (shifting from northwest Bay of Bengal), and another over the Central Bay of Bengal. These systems are under close observation as they may evolve into a low-pressure area in the coming days, potentially bringing more intense weather patterns.

Despite the expected showers, the IMD has noted that there will be no significant change in daytime temperatures across Odisha over the next 6 to 7 days.

The state is also under Nor’wester (Kalbaisakhi) alert for another three days, which could lead to sudden and localized weather disturbances.

Residents are advised to stay updated with local alerts, avoid outdoor exposure during storm hours, and take necessary precautions against lightning and strong winds.
