Bhubaneswar: Glass liquor bottles, often discarded irresponsibly after consumption, have become a menace in Odisha, causing environmental pollution and accidents among the public and animals. BJD MLA Sana Mahakud raised this issue in the Odisha Assembly, expressing grave concern over the indiscriminate disposal of these bottles on roads, farmlands, and water bodies.
In a written query, Mahakud pointed out that intoxicated individuals frequently smash and discard these bottles without considering the consequences, leading to injuries and environmental degradation. He urged the government to replace glass bottles with safer alternatives to prevent accidents and safeguard the environment.
Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan acknowledged that liquor is sold in glass bottles in the state, but stated that there were no reports of injuries caused by broken bottles. He also informed the Assembly that the government is exploring alternatives like tetra packs for liquor packaging to address the issue.
The discussion in the Assembly has sparked significant public interest, with many advocating for immediate action to mitigate the risks posed by broken glass bottles.
